(10) Kaantha Story / Plot:
The story of the 2025 film Kaantha is a period drama horror thriller set in the golden age of 1950s Madras (now Chennai), a time of significant change for the Indian film industry and the nation itself. The plot centers on Ayya (Samuthirakani), an influential director in the early Tamil film industry, and Chandran (Dulquer Salmaan), the rising superstar he mentored and helped establish. Ayya played a crucial role in Chandran's success, training him from a nobody into a star. Over time, as Chandran's fame grows, the relationship between the mentor and protégé becomes strained, primarily due to ego clashes and creative differences. The conflict intensifies during the production of a new horror film titled Shaantha. Ayya, who is the writer and director, wants the female character to be the central focus of the story. However, the egotistical Chandran clashes with him, making changes to the script and ultimately renaming the movie to "Kaantha" to center it around his own image.
The film explores the personal and professional animosity that builds between the two men, which is further complicated by elements of horror and the social transformations of post-independence India. The narrative uses haunting imagery and a moody atmosphere to set the tone for a gripping cinematic experience, blurring the lines between their on-screen film and their real-life feud.
